Students in Year 9 must take one semester course of a Language. Students can select from Te Reo Māori or French.
Students may also choose to do a Language option for two semesters.
Nau mai haere mai! Te Whakatōtanga 1 is where students will learn about basic te reo māori such as to greet, farewell, and acknowledge people, and respond to greetings and acknowledgment. Students will learn to introduce themselves and others using te reo as well as learn how to respond to these introductions. They will also develop skill in using numbers for ages, dates and birthdays; give personal information, such as the their name, parents’ and grandparents’ names, iwi, hapū, mountain and river, or home town. All of this will enable students to be able to korero māori about where people live.
Te Whakatōtanga 2 is where students develop their te reo skills and learn to describe family relationships and talk about feelings, likes and dislikes. Students will be able to describe activities, korero about the time, the weather and the seasons and learn how to discuss feelings and conditions; physical characteristics and possessions.
