Literacy and Numeracy at NCEA Level 1
From 2024 there are some significant changes to the way that students achieve the Literacy and Numeracy requirements for Level 1 NCEA. These include:
From 2024, all learners need to achieve a 20-credit co-requisite specific to these skills to be awarded any level of NCEA. The co-requisite is a one-off requirement.
In 2024, the literacy and numeracy requirements of the NCEA are formally separated out from the certificate at Levels 1-3 and the 20-credit co-requisite becomes mandatory.
The 20 Credit Co-requisite skills are assessed through an exam. Students can sit these exams when they are ready and they can have multiple attempts
The co-requisites exams are broken into: Numeracy, Reading and Writing
During 2024 and 2025 there are additional standards that can be used to achieve the NCEA co-requisite. There are some standards in subject areas that have been 'tagged' for literacy and or numeracy and can be used to meet this requirement. Many of these standards are externals. If a student uses this pathway then the credits they use for meeting the co-requisites cannot be used as part of their 60 NCEA Level 1 credits.
