On behalf of the Dunecrest MUN secretariat, welcome to Dunecrest MUN 2025!
We are thrilled to have you participate in the third annual Dunecrest American School Model United Nations Conference, taking place from the 21st to 23rd of November. This conference will feature committees organized under categories such as General Assemblies, Political Assemblies, Economic Assemblies, and Junior Assemblies, with a total of four committees. As a delegate, you will be required to select your top three committee preferences and, if allotted, you will engage in discussions and debates on one to two topics assigned to the committee over the course of three days.
The theme for Dunecrest MUN 2025 is "Redefining Power and Responsibility in an Interconnected World.” This theme highlights the importance of understanding how influence, technology, and global interdependence shape our shared future. In today’s rapidly evolving landscape, nations, organizations, and individuals must exercise their power with accountability, collaboration, and foresight. At the conference, delegates will have the opportunity to explore critical issues, including international security, resource equity, digital privacy, and environmental justice, all through the lens of shared global responsibility. By fostering an environment that encourages ethical leadership, open dialogue, and collective problem-solving, we hope to inspire the next generation of leaders to create a more balanced, equitable, and sustainable world. This theme not only provides an opportunity to learn about these global challenges but also to engage in discussions on redefining what it means to be a responsible global actor in the 21st century.
This document contains the topics per committee, along with brief descriptions, to give you more insight into the subjects that will be debated. Please note that your preferences do not guarantee allocation to one of your top three choices; however, we will do our best to accommodate everyone's preferences.

General Committees (Red Stream)
Topic 1: Addressing Nuclear Tensions Between India and Pakistan: Regional Security and Risk of Escalation
The longstanding rivalry between India and Pakistan continues to pose one of the most persistent threats to peace and security in South Asia. Rooted in historical, territorial, and political disputes, particularly over Kashmir, the relationship between the two nuclear-armed neighbors remains fragile. Recurrent border clashes, militant activity, and inflammatory rhetoric have heightened fears of accidental or intentional escalation, raising global concerns over nuclear stability in the region. The Security Council must work to de-escalate tensions by fostering dialogue, strengthening crisis communication mechanisms, and promoting confidence-building measures to prevent conflict and ensure long-term regional security.
Topic 2: The Future of Humanitarian Assistance in Yemen Amid Regional Proxy Warfare and Red Sea Security Challenges
Yemen remains the site of one of the world’s most severe humanitarian crises, exacerbated by ongoing civil conflict and the involvement of regional powers through proxy warfare. The destruction of infrastructure, widespread famine, and outbreaks of disease have left millions in urgent need of aid, while instability in the Red Sea threatens global trade routes and humanitarian access. The complex interplay between regional rivalries and maritime security concerns has further obstructed relief efforts. The Security Council faces the challenge of safeguarding humanitarian operations, ensuring unhindered access to aid, and addressing the broader regional dynamics that perpetuate instability in Yemen and the Red Sea corridor.
North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO)
Topic 1: Reassessing NATO’s Strategic Autonomy: Ensuring Collective Security in the Possible Absence of U.S. Reliance
As global power dynamics evolve, NATO faces increasing pressure to redefine its strategic autonomy and operational resilience. NATO has long relied heavily on U.S. capabilities (strategic lift, nuclear deterrent, major power projection); recent debates about ‘European strategic autonomy’ reflect concern about how the Alliance would operate during reduced U.S. engagement and call for strengthened European capabilities and burden-sharing. Emerging security challenges, from hybrid warfare to energy insecurity, further underscore the need for a more self-reliant and coordinated European defense posture. The Security Council must examine ways to strengthen transatlantic burden-sharing, enhance independent defense capabilities, and ensure NATO’s continued credibility and unity in safeguarding peace and stability across the Euro-Atlantic region.
Topic 2: Strengthening Transatlantic Unity: A Coordinated NATO Strategy Toward Russia, China, and Emerging Security Threats
NATO stands at a pivotal moment as it confronts an increasingly complex global security environment marked by renewed confrontation with Russia, strategic competition with China, and the rise of new threats such as cyber warfare, disinformation, and emerging technologies. Divergent national priorities among member states have challenged transatlantic unity, potentially risking to a fragmented response to these multifaceted challenges. The Security Council must prioritize reinforcing NATO cohesion through shared strategic vision, enhanced defense cooperation, and coordinated policy responses to maintain global stability and uphold the principles of collective security.

Political Committees (Yellow Stream)
Security Council (UNSC)
Topic 1: Ensuring Peace and Stability in the Taiwan Strait: Security Challenges Posed by China and the United States
The Taiwan Strait remains a focal point of geopolitical tension, representing one of the most complex and sensitive security challenges in East Asia. The increasing military presence and political rivalry between China and the United States have raised concerns over regional stability and the potential for armed confrontation. The Security Council faces the critical task of promoting dialogue, upholding international law, and ensuring the peaceful resolution of disputes to prevent escalation and maintain security in the Asia-Pacific region.
Topic 2: Preventing Armed Conflicts Over Critical Mineral Resources: Addressing the Crisis in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Safeguarding Global Supply Chain Security
The Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) has some of the world’s most significant reserves of critical minerals, essential for modern technologies and renewable energy production. However, competition over these resources has contributed to prolonged instability, human rights violations, and the financing of armed groups. The Security Council must address the interconnection between natural resource exploitation and conflict by strengthening governance frameworks, ensuring responsible supply chain practices, and promoting sustainable development to secure both regional peace and global economic stability.
European Union (EU)
Topic 1: Addressing Democratic Backsliding Within the European Union: Mechanisms for Accountability, Sanctions, and Potential Expulsion of Member States
Democratic backsliding poses a fundamental challenge to the European Union’s core values of democracy, rule of law, and respect for human rights. Instances of weakened judicial independence, restrictions on media freedom, and political interference have raised concerns about the Union’s ability to ensure compliance among member states. The European Union must evaluate and potentially strengthen its mechanisms for accountability, including the use of sanctions, conditionality, including suspension of rights under Article 7, funding conditionality, targeted sanctions, and exploring whether treaty amendments or political instruments are needed to deter or respond to sustained backsliding, in order to preserve institutional integrity and uphold the principles upon which the Union was founded.
Topic 2: The EU Chat Control Bill: Balancing Child Protection With Privacy Rights and Freedom of Speech in Digital Communication
The proposed EU Chat Control Bill seeks to combat the spread of dangerous material online by implementing detection and monitoring systems across digital communication platforms. While the bill aims to enhance child protection, it has also sparked significant debate regarding privacy, data security, and freedom of expression. The European Union faces the complex challenge of formulating legislation that effectively safeguards children without undermining the fundamental rights of its citizens or compromising digital privacy standards.
