On behalf of the Dunecrest MUN secretariat, welcome to Dunecrest MUN 2024!
We are thrilled to have you participate in the second annual Dunecrest American School Model United Nations Conference, taking place from October 18th to 20th. This conference will feature committees under categories such as General Assemblies, Political Assemblies, Economic Assemblies, and Junior Assemblies, with nine committees in total. As a delegate, you will be required to select your top three committee preferences and, if allotted, you will engage in discussions and debates on one to two topics assigned to the committee over the course of three days.
The theme for Dunecrest MUN 2024 is "Using Innovative Approaches to Address Global Challenges." This theme highlights the importance of using creative and forward-thinking solutions to tackle the complex and pressing issues facing our world today. With the ever-evolving global landscape, it is crucial that we approach these challenges with fresh ideas and a willingness to think outside the box. At the conference, delegates will have the opportunity to explore innovative approaches to addressing topics such as climate change, economic inequality, and political instability, among others. By fostering an environment that encourages creative problem-solving and collaboration, we hope to inspire the next generation of leaders to find new and effective ways to make a positive impact in the world. This theme not only provides an opportunity to learn about these global challenges but also to engage in discussions on finding practical and innovative solutions to these challenges.
This document contains the topics per committee, along with brief descriptions, to give you more insight into the subjects that will be debated. Please keep in mind that your preferences do not guarantee allocation to one of your top three choices, but we will do our best to accommodate everyone's preferences.

Strengthening International Cooperation on War in Sudan and Neighboring Regions
Terrorism poses a significant threat in Sudan and its neighboring regions, where instability and conflict have allowed extremist groups to thrive. This topic focuses on enhancing international cooperation to combat terrorism in these areas, with a particular emphasis on preventing attacks, disrupting networks, and addressing the root causes of extremism. Delegates will explore ways to improve intelligence sharing, align legal frameworks, and support counter-radicalization efforts while balancing security with human rights. Key countries like Sudan, Chad, Egypt, and Ethiopia will share their experiences with domestic terrorism, while international actors such as the African Union and the United Nations will play crucial roles in developing a comprehensive strategy for regional security.
North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO)
Navigating the Aftermath of U.S. Withdrawal and Member State Fragmentation
After the United States, led by President Donald Trump, withdrew from NATO, the alliance faced a severe crisis. Key member nations, influenced by their ruling parties' ideologies, began to leave or reconsider their commitments. The UK and France, under nationalist governments, have exited, while countries like Hungary have turned inward, challenging NATO’s unity. Delegates must now address whether NATO can survive this fragmentation or if it signals the end of the alliance.

Addressing Challenges and Opportunities of Migration: Reforming Asylum Policies and Integrating Refugees
Migration has become a critical challenge for the European Union, with increasing numbers of asylum seekers and migrants arriving due to conflicts and political instability. The current framework for managing migration is often seen as fragmented and inadequate, leading to unequal burdens on member states, particularly those at the EU's external borders. As Europe grapples with balancing border security, humanitarian obligations, and the socio-economic integration of migrants, there is an urgent need for an approach that addresses both the immediate and long-term aspects of migration.

This topic will explore ways to protect historical and cultural sites from destruction, preserve intangible cultural heritage, and ensure that education remains accessible despite the ongoing conflict. Delegates will discuss potential international cooperation strategies, funding for reconstruction efforts, and implementing emergency educational programs that address the needs of children and youth in conflict zones.

State Cooperation, Overcoming Challenges in Arresting and Surrendering Suspects Concerning World Leaders
This topic focuses on the issue of state cooperation with the International Criminal Court (ICC) Despite the ICC's mandate to prosecute such crimes, securing the cooperation of states in apprehending and transferring suspects to the court remains a formidable challenge, often fraught with political complexities such as an unwillingness to release high profile individuals which have been tried. The Ethicality of Using Anti-Aging Drugs to Prolong Football Careers
As advancements in medical science continue, the potential to enhance human performance and extend careers through pharmaceuticals has become a reality. In football, where the physical demands are immense, and careers are often short-lived, the use of anti-aging drugs has sparked a significant ethical debate. These drugs may allow players to maintain peak physical condition and extend their playing years, but they also raise questions about fairness, health risks, and the integrity of the sport.
