The Grid Method was developed by Chad Ostrowski, http://thegridmethod.com/
Start with the standard for the unit/topic
- Each grid becomes your unit/topic plan
- Example - Natural Selection
- Example - Plate Tectonics
Break down into learning targets that are leveled by complexity
- Level 1 = foundational knowledge
- Level 2 = compare/contrast
- Level 3 = application
- Level 4 = synthesis, developing new ways to interpret or think about the content
- Develop formative and summative assessments to gage learning (or, my preference... raid past ones)
Chart out activities/lessons to meet these learning targets
- Add formative assessments for kids to see if they “get it” - you can even add feedback in case they miss some, any, none so they can learn from the experience!
Determine where all kids must go (which level satisfies mastery of this content?). The rest will be extension/enrichment.
How Can my LMS Support This?
- Different folders for each level
- Within each folder is a page of resources (links, simulations, video clips, directions for an in-class lab/activity, etc.)
- There is also a link to an (ungraded, in my opinion, but scored) formative assessment that can be taken as many times as needed - you can even build in feedback
- Folders become available as you determine when a student “levels up”

- Kids are working at their own pace and get constant feedback about how they are doing with the content.
- Students can identify what they are working on right now (ex: “I’m trying to understand how ocean floor mapping supports the theory of plate tectonics.”)
I would recommend…
- You are ready for the kiddos that finish Levels 1 & 2 quickly!
- You watch out for those who are methodically working and interject if necessary to support them.
