Developmental Reading

This year-long course meets two days in the six day cycle.

Mrs. Holthaus can be found in Room 104 from 7:45 am until 3:10 pm. If you have questions before or after those hours, I can be reached at Sholthaus@dsdhs.com. Messages can also be sent through the Google Classroom (a link to my email is posted under the General Information heading in each classroom).

COURSE EXPECTATIONS

The purpose of Developmental Reading course is to help you to become better readers (and students). In order for that to happen, you are expected to be contributing members of each class by coming to class with the necessary materials, having assignments completed on time, appropriately participating in class discussions, and not distracting from instruction or time dedicated to learning. You are encouraged to ask for help when needed in order to achieve the best possible scores on fiction and non-fiction assignments and to strengthen your reading skills.

It is important that you know up front that I expect you to be a responsible student in regards to assignments, due dates and following directions when they are given. You are responsible for yourself, your possessions and your actions.

ASSIGNMENTS AND GRADES

Every paper assignment will be returned to you with the expectation that you will keep it in your binder in the proper section. This allows your parents/guardians access to your work and also provides you with references as we will build on assignments throughout the year.

Although I know many of you check CSIU regularly, a grade sheet will be provided for you at the start of each marking period to record grades and keep organized. In addition, you and your parents/guardians should use the online grade access (Parent Portal) to remain informed as grades will be updated on a weekly basis.

(IN CLASS) ASSIGNMENTS will typically be paper/pencil assignments but we will utilize ChromeBooks as well. Each assignment will be posted on our Google Classroom even if it is being done on paper. All assignment due dates/times will be provided on the day the assignment is given. Your work must be turned in by that due date (and time) in order to receive full credit. If you are absent, it is your responsibility to check the Google Classroom and, if necessary, come to my room to collect any materials upon your return to school (even if it is not a day that we have class). You are still responsible for having the work in on the due date. On the chance that you do not complete an assignment by the due date/time, you will have ONE WEEK to turn in an assignment for half credit. (NOTE: If an assignment is due at 8:00 and you submit it at 8:10, it is LATE and will count for half credit. Please be mindful of both dates and times in order to earn full credit for your hard work). After that week, the assignment will no longer be accepted and a grade of zero will be entered on CSIU. Once a grade of zero is entered in CSIU, the assignment is no longer available for credit.

We are going to have a wonderful year together, read some fun and interesting stories, and end the year a bit better and a lot smarter than we are today!
