4. Repertoire Class - By maintaining excellent attendance and commitment to a minimum of 2 MUSICAL ENSEMBLES throughout the year, you have the opportunity to earn extra academic credit. ANY music student may choose to take the repertoire class, but ALL DNA music students are required to. Progress reports will go home in January (midterm) and June (final). There is NO formal written component to the repertoire class. Repertoire is a FULL-YEAR course.
Evaluation:
*regular attendance and participation *willingness and ability to take direction
*performance at all concerts *music folder organization and completeness
*leadership and commitment *any other assignments/reflections
*a midterm and final performance
5. DNA Requirements - If you are a student who was successfully placed in the DNA arts stream, you can find specific course requirements on the Laura Secord Secondary School website. For music, the requirements are:
* take at least two music credits each year, including repertoire
* complete one concert critique each year (submit them early if you’d like!)
* maintain at least 75% attendance in either choir, band, or strings
* in Grade 11/12, audition for a higher performance level ensemble (jazz choir, chamber
choir, jazz band, drumline, chamber group) or for solo opportunities within your chosen ensembles
* take on leadership roles in music council (or similar) endeavours
6. Music Council - We have a Music Council that will help organize the logistics of the music department. If you are in Grade 9 and are interested in getting involved, please get in touch with Ms. Sacco or Mr. Alexander. We meet on Thursdays at lunch in Room 128.
7. Fundraising: - www.flipgive.com
Use the invitation code: FBJ3FZ to earn money towards music trips! Hundreds of retailers are available, and it is a great way to earn money without having to SPEND extra money on things you don’t necessarily need or want. All of your earnings will be returned directly to you when you're ready to use them for a department trip or festival.
8. SHSM Arts and Culture
Senior Students have the opportunity to gain extra experiences, trips and workshops by enrolling in the Specialist High Skills Major program with a focus on Arts and Culture. Ms. Sacco will be meeting with these students soon.
Thanks so much for your continued support!
