Maths Challenge puzzles

If you would like to try some maths puzzles visit the national u3a website :

www.u3a.org.uk/learning/national-programmes/maths-challenge

Four new puzzles are added each week with the solutions the following week and all previous puzzles are available to download. They aren't too difficult!!

National Maths events

Last year the National u3a Maths and Statistics Subject adviser arranged a talk and workshop both online via Zoom

Maths on the Back of an Envelope by Rob Eastaway

The speaker is the author of popular maths books such as Maths on the Back of an Envelope, Why Do Buses Come in Threes? and Maths for Mums and Dads. His first book was What is a Googly?, an explanation of cricket for Americans and other newcomers to the game.

An interesting talk mostly about methods of estimating the results of calculations by approximating values and also the unnecessary degrees of accuracy of statistics often quoted in the media. I have a copy of some of his books which are very readable and available on Kindle.

Maths problems and puzzles workshop

2:30 PM – 3:30 PM on Thursday 22nd April 2021

An interactive event solving maths puzzles for a range of abilities. Two puzzles will be sent out to registered participants prior to the event and the session will look at how people addressed these as well as additional puzzles.

The two puzzles sent out were not too complicated and the answers could be determined by various methods, from trial and error to Calculus.

Maths activities and games

These fun sessions of interactive games and puzzles were part of the U3A series of events to tie in with Maths Week 2020.

The workshops were hosted by the U3A's Maths and Stats Subject Adviser.

Future events are planned for 2022

Bookings can be made on the National u3a website - Events - Online events page
