A slam itself is simply a poetry competition in which poets perform original work alone or in teams before an audience, which serves as judge. The work is judged as much on the manner and enthusiasm of its performance as its content or style, and many slam poems are not intended to be read silently from the page. The structure of the traditional slam was started by construction worker and poet Marc Smith in 1986 at a reading series in a Chicago jazz club.

Try this: Create a poetry collage using striking images you find in modern poets' work.

Search for six different lines or images within the poetry that speak to you. To find poetry you can start with Billy Collins' project, Poetry 180: A Poem a Day for American High Schools.

Write down the lines, as well as the authors and titles.

Combine those lines together with your own linking words and with visuals of your own creation or curation (please remember to give credit to the artist f you are using someone else's art)

I would love to see what you create - email me your finished product at drothfeld@drizquierdocs.org
