In chemistry we have been discussing different types of bonds. These bonds include ionic, covalent, and metallic. Covalent bonding is responsible for the bonding of dyes and paints to papers, fabric, etc. My art above shows the covalent molecule Melatonin. I chose to do this because melatonin has been really popular and I thought it would be creative to do it. My art includes nitrogen, oxygen, hydrogen, and carbon molecules. I created this by firs drawing the molecule of melatonin, and I decide to color code the different elements. Once I finished I decided to draw sleepy faces in some of the circles because melatonin helps you go to sleep.
For this project, we had to create an artwork that involves and chemical reaction. For my artwork, I decided to make a Takashi Murakami flower tray out of clay. To create clay a chemical process is used. The reactants are Silica(2SiO2), Alumina(Al2O3), and Water(2H2O). The product for these reactants is clay which means this is a synthesis chemical reaction. The finished product of clay has been fired twice. When it is fired the clay becomes a light pink color. When it is fired the matter in the clay turns to carbon dioxide, fluorine, and sulfur dioxide. One thing I did well during this project was being able to use what we did in art a couple of weeks ago to make my finished product. One thing I would do differently is I would make an art piece that can be used in the future, like a bowl or cup.
