Chimamada Ngozi Adiche’s first novel, Purple Hibiscus, tells the story of a young woman named Kambili who must grow up and escape her abusive father. In the beginning of the novel, Kambili is shy and hesitant because her father has complete control of her life. However, after a near death experience, Kambili spends time with her aunt and decides to break free of her father's control. Kambili changes from being insecure to being confident revealing that you must get away from the people that hold you back, so you can spread your wings and discover your true self.
