10th Grade

ChemVAS Typography Image

I created a digital image of the word ChemVAS by collaging using pictures or drawings of different items and letters. My typography creation consists of the curve of a microscope as the letter C. Overlapping paint brushes as an H. Molecules shaped into an E, tilted chemical test tubes into an M. I also drew a V using the selections of brushes and colors on sketchpad, and an art easel as an A. Lastly, I shaped magnets to create an S. I made sure to add a lot of color to my creation as I wanted it to be something bright and fun to view.

Density Paint Pour

8-15-22

To create this piece of art I poured different colors of paint onto a canvas using the paint kiss acrylic pour technique which creates a marble design with different colors. I also used straws to create different shapes, patterns, and depth within the painting. This interactive activity helped give me a better understanding density and how it works.  Based on my painting, the color that was the most dense in my painting was the blue paint and the color that was the least dense was the white paint.

It's All Elementary

This assignment was to create a picture describing how your element is used in an everyday environment.  To create this artwork I used Photopea which is a drawing and editing software. This required pictures and drawings in my piece. To create the sky I selected a color and used the paint bucket tool. I also included pictures from the internet for the pool and gate. I used the lasso select tool to create mountains and the paint brush to create the clouds and bushes. My element was Chlorine so I used a pool to symbolize what I do or use that includes chlorine in it. The most difficult part of this project was creating the different layers for the drawings, using the lasso tool, and finding the right pictures.

ChemVAS Ceramics

I created an element tile of Tungsten (W). This element tile has a W on it which is the element symbol for Tungsten on the periodic table. I also included a zig-zag background to enhance the design and a light bulb on the top corner because tungsten is found in lightbulbs.  To create this I started off by sketching out what I wanted the tile to look like including my element name the atomic mass, atomic number, and something that the element is used in.  Next, I got my design approved then starting working with the clay. I cut out a square measurement of 3" x 3"  then I started to carve out the patterns/designs I wanted on my tile. After, putting my design on my square of clay we bisque fired it which is used to dry the clay making it a harder consistency so the clay can easily absorb the glaze. Then, to add color to the clay we used glaze. Once you were done glazing  your item you let it dry a bit and then you put it back in the kiln where its fired to the temperature at which the glaze ingredients will melt together to form a glassy surface. The hardest part throughout this process was carving out the designs into wet clay because I prioritized making sure the lines were straight and shapes were even and if you didn't use the right tools that was a hard task. Another step that was difficult for me was glazing the tile because I couldn't get to certain small corners and areas. Also it was hard finding the right colors and making sure it would look the same after being fired. Chemistry is related to ceramics as many ceramics contain mixtures of ionic and covalent bonds between atoms. A ceramic is an inorganic, nonmetallic solid, generally based on an oxide, nitride, boride, or carbide, that is fired at a high temperature.

Rhian Schoffner - Deeply Rooted

ChemVAS Deeply Rooted

This is a slideshow showing the documentation of my process from Brief to Research, Idea Development, Prototyping, questions from my test , and photos of the final artworks from my PBL project. Deeply Rooted was a second quarter grade level project that tried to explore how symbols might express cultural differences and commonalities. We examined the use of symbols throughout the world and came up with our own symbols that reflect our current lifestyles. In Art class, we manufactured hand-made paper and Borax crystals, which we utilized to design symbols. I decided to create a zodiac horoscope that represents the cancer zodiac in the sky. Bending the paper was tough, and I would like to make it bigger next time and also add more color contrast to make it visible in the PBL. On the day of the presentation, our work was displayed alongside performances from other civilizations throughout the world.

Stain Glass

For my final in geometry we created stain glass. To create this piece we used 5 main shapes which were a rhombus, parallelogram, 2 congruent triangle, square, and a rectangle.  We also had a 10th grade PBL where we showcased different cultures and traditions through music, poetry, and dance. The three elements of art and principles that were incorporated in my design were color ,balance, lines and space. Every single one of those helped me pay attention to my creativity and how detailed I was being with my project. In class we have been leaning about proofs and doing this project gave me a better understanding on this lesson because we measured a lot of triangles, other  shapes, found and calculated angles which is the same concept with proofs.

ChemVAS Principles of Design

For my design I wanted to illustrate a pattern. Patterns the repeating of an objector symbol all over the work of art. To do this I used various different shapes and lines to create a unique design. I used lines so that the drawing wouldn’t be as plain and it wouldn't just be a drawing full of shapes. I first started off by illustrating my drawing using a pencil then I went over the pencil using colored markers so that it would have more emphasis on the shapes and lines.

DIY Paper Ornament

Guernica Painting

We created a painting about what we would go to war for. My group's goal was to illustrate an inspired version of Picasso's "Guernica" painting. with the topic being war including shapes, colors, and emotions. This relates to Picasso's piece because the purpose of his art piece was to showcase his outrage against the war. We created a painting that displayed our outrage against abortion laws in the United States.

"A Change Is Gonna Come" Slideshow

This is a slideshow that I created to show the process of creating the painting including sketches and final pictures. It also contains research about cubism paintings, research contemporary conflict, and describes problems that I believe are worth standing up for.

Copper Art

In Chemistry I created a cool pattern on a piece of copper using fire from a candle. This was really fun process because it created cool colors and depending on the way you move the paper around on the fire. I've never expierenced this before so it was very intersting for me.

Columbian Exchange Reflection

The Columbian Exchange refers to the exchange of plants, animals, and diseases between the Old World (Europe, Asia, and Africa) and the New World (the Americas) which began after Christopher Columbus's voyages to the Americas in 1492. This exchange of plants, animals, and diseases had a lasting impact on the environment, economy, and culture of both the Old and New Worlds. The onset of exchange was caused by a variety of factors, including the development of agriculture and the emergence of private property, the growth of trade networks and the rise of money, the invention of writing and record keeping, the development of cities and other permanent settlements, the development of a labor market, and the emergence of marketplaces. The exchange of plants between the hemispheres had a major impact on the global environment. Over time, species such as potatoes, maize, tomatoes, and peppers were introduced to the New World from the Old World and vice versa. The introduction of Old World diseases to the New World caused a dramatic decrease in the population of indigenous people, while on the other side, the introduction of New World diseases to the Old World caused a decrease in population and an increase in mortality rates. Ideas: Through the exchange of ideas, the two hemispheres became more interconnected. This exchange included new technologies, religious and philosophical ideas, and new methods of doing business. Different cultures began to influence each other in a variety of ways, and this exchange of ideas continues to this day. To help my group in the PBL project I cooked rice, mixed different items together, and helped plate the food.

Rhian Schoffner - Tattoo Design Process

Tattoo Slideshow

This is a slideshow that displays the design proccess of creating a tattoo. It shows the research where I learned about the histoy and benefits of tattoos. The idea development where I found inspiration for what I wanted my tattoo to look like. After, I started to create rough drafts of my tattoo until it was perfected. Finally, I made my final draft.
