Teacher Appreciation Week Gift

Brief (4/22/24)

Teachers work hard every day to help students achieve their goals and to learn more every day. Teacher appreciation week is to appreciation teachers on the work that they do. My goal is to create a gift for one of my teachers to show my appreciation for the work that they do. The majority of my creation will be made out of wood.

Brainstorm & Sketch

I chose to combine the ruler pencil holder with my own design of a box. I will use the design of having a pencil holder, and make a lattice design on the box. I will use tinker cad to create my design, and will use a laser cutter to cut out everything. I will also engrave the name of my teacher than I am making the box for.

Brief: The goal is to create a bowl from a Laser Cutter that is based on kinetic sculptures. The theme for this project is Growth. Growth makes me think of Change, Transformation, Nature, Flowers, and Plants. The deadline for completion is: Friday, April 19th.

SA Academy

The challenges that I faced were creating the flower on a CAD. I wasn’t able to figure out how to create the flower on onshape, so I had to use another program, inkscape. I chose this flower because I thought it looked good, and that it symbolizes strength, resilience, and rebirth. Craftsmanship is a physical artform that can show the beauty of nature like flowers, trees, plants, etc. My creation relates to Space Is The New Place and Earth Day because my design is based off of a flower. I used plywood to make my design, and I used a laser cutter to create it.

Infinity Table Project

Mu Editor Code

In this project, I had to make a patter with LED lights on a board. To make the pattern, I had to code everything in Mu Editor. The image shows part of the code that sets the LED lights. The comments or the text with a "#" in front of them tells the reader what the code does.

Stoplight Assignment

For this assignment I had to create a stoplight on the board with Mu Editor. I used python to code this.

Custom Box 8/23

Bottom

On this, we combined the bottom pieces of the box together using a biscuit jointer.

Side Pieces

For this, I connected the side pieces like the front, back, left, and right pieces usingi the biscuit jointer.

Box

This is the box put together. I also used the orbital sander to smooth out all of the outer sides. This made all of the pieces of wood feel like one.

Lid

This is the start of my lid which will go on the top. I used the biscuit jointer to join the wood pieces together. After using the biscuit jointer, I used wood glue to also keep the pieces of wood together.

Wood Putty

During this part, I filled the holes and cracks with wood putty. this was to fill in the holes in the box. After the wood putty dried, I sanded the box again to remove the excess wood putty on the box.

Staining

Lid

I stained my wood with 2 layers in my box. I used a cloth to distribute the stain around the wood. I put 1 layer of stain, then let it dry, then put a second layer of stain.

For this, I added the lid to my box by connecting it to hinges.

8/4 Sample Task

Brief/Introduction

For this project, I have to make a phone stand which is made out of wood. The stand has to be able to hold the phone to where you can see it and it has to be unique.

Challenges

It was hard to make a perfect rectangle because the bandsaw couldn't turn 90 degrees. We had to make curves to make it.

Brief/Introduction: We have been given the activity to make a custom box out of wood/lumber. As a class we will choose from three different box designs.

Bandsaw

Safety Rules:

Only one person can be using the bandsaw at once.
You have to be wearing safety glasses/goggles.
You must be with a teacher if you aren't experienced enough.

A bandsaw is a power tool used for cutting wood and metal.

Nail Gun

Safety rules:

Don't point the nail gun at other people or yourself.
You have to be wearing safety glasses/goggles.
When you are nailing two things together, you must put it over the ground and not on the table so the nail doesn't go in the table.

A nail gun is a tool to nail two things, usually wood, together.

Miter Saw

You must wear safety glasses/goggles.
Keep hair back in a bun/hat.
Don't touch the safety guard.

It is used for making angled cuts, or just straight crosscuts. The miter saw cuts things like wood.

Table Saw

You must wear safety glasses
To remove loose clothing.
Use the feather board.
Don't cross cut with the rip fence.
Don't stand right in front of the blade.

A table saw is used for cutting across (crosscut) and with (rip) the wood grain

Orbital Sander

You must be wearing safety glasses.
Keep the sander moving all time time.
Be careful to not place the sander on your skin.
Don't touch the sand paper while the sander isk operational
Don't put the sander on surfaces that can be damaged by the sander.
Don't put the sander on surfaces that can be damaged by the sander

The orbital sander soothes out flaws, and prepares wood for staining

Wood Putty

Make sure the wood putty is dry before sandingn it down.
Mix the wood putty well.
Make sure to fill everything in what you are filling.
Don't get it onto your clothes.
Don't eat it.
Don't leave it to dry on the stick and clean up after.

Wood putty is used to fill in gaps and holes in wood. Wood putty is made with fine wood dust, and wood glue.
