How can art, like Picasso’s Guernica, be used to creatively express the impact of societal conflict and promote activism?
This is our artist statement explaining the whole project and our art piece on abortion.
I designed this poster to make a bold statement about abortion rights. The phrase “Abortions SAVE lives” is short and direct because I want people to understand that safe, legal abortion is healthcare. The slogan “YOUR body, YOUR choice” is something I believe in. It’s about personal freedom and the right to make decisions about our bodies. I used strong visuals, like the raised fist and megaphone, to symbolize power and activism. The diverse group of women represents that this issue affects all people. Abortion rights have been under attack for years, especially since Roe v. Wade in 1973 was overturned, so I wanted this poster to encourage people to stand up and fight for their rights as women.
This is our psa video about abortions.
Our drawing centers around a close-up of an eye, representing the emotional core of grief and helplessness. Inside the eye, we incorporated chemical structures of neurotransmitters associated with sadness, blending visual symbolism with scientific meaning. The tears streaming from the eye symbolize both the emotional pain of the figure and the biological reaction to emotional distress. Like Picasso’s original work, we used minimal colors and dramatic lines to highlight emotional intensity. The eye not only watches but also reflects suffering, much like how viewers of Guernica are meant to witness the horrors of war.
