Literature Project 1: Empathy Collage

Swamps and Billy Goats

For our first project in literature, we based collages off of characters from the Odyssey. Our character was the cyclops, Polyphemus. He is the son of Poseidon and lives on the island of Sicily. Odysseus blinded Polyphemus with a wooden stake after Polyphemus kept Odysseus and his men. We compared Polyphemus with Shrek. Shrek had to leave his family at the age of seven and find a home that could protect him from screaming men with pitchforks. Over the years Shrek encountered many intruders and if you can remember, Shrek was not the nicest of ogres and liked his time alone. Polyphemus lives in his cave all alone, and based on the poem we read from his point of view, Polyphemus was curious because he never leaves his island. Polyphemus was barged in on by many humans, he must have been curious to take them in. All in all, our collage was to provide empathy for Polyphemus and Shrek. They are both lonely creatures, who just want a friend.
