This project aimed to see if mice's brains expressed activity when bred with a protein called Cre. We wanted the Cre to be expressed in a specific area of the brain called the dLGN. This project aimed to see if we could specifically target one area of the brain to show a reaction while leaving everything else alone. If we were successful, that means we could work towards less invasive treatments for Amblyopia(Lazy Eye).
This internship isn't even comparable to any other experience I've had. I've learned more about not only lab tasks, but also office/soft skills. I learned how to write professional emails, use MATLAB, and public speaking skills.
This internship made me reconsider my stance on biomedical engineering. At first I was opposed to the idea of being in a lab, but when I realized how mechanical and electrical engineering are huge aspects of biomedical engineering, I was inspired to pursue this career more deeply. It didn't change my plans for what I wanted to major in, but it impacted the jobs I'll be working towards getting.
