We planned a trip as travel agents to Costa Rica for two of our customers. We had a budget of $7,000. Our budget included our flight, accommodations, transportation to and from the airport, our activities, and our food. This project is important because we learned how to plan a trip within the parameters of a budget using Spanish in a real-life context.
Today we made lampblack ink using a candle, a spoon, gum arabic powder, and rubbing alcohol. First, we held a spoon over the lit candle to create soot. After covering the whole spoon with soot we scraped it off into a cup. Then we added gum arabic powder and rubbing alcohol to the soot and mixed it together, creating ink. The ink I created was successful because of its darkness, but I did not have a lot because it takes a while to gather a large amount of soot.
Combustion occurs when burning a candle which is a chemical reaction. The molecules from the combustion react with oxygen to create carbon dioxide. This reaction is a covalent bond.
There are many everyday ingredients to make natural dyes. Some ingredients include spinach, blackberries, and carrots. The process to making dye with these ingredients is very simple. First start by letting the fiber (you intend on dyeing) soak in water. Next extract the dye from your natural ingredient by soaking it in warm water. Then dip fabric into dye and let soak so the whole fabric is covered. After, wash fabric with pH neutral soap. Lastly, lay out fabric to dry.
You can also experiment when making the dye. Adding lemon juice or baking soda can alter the color of the natural dye. For example, adding lemon juice to cabbage dye turns it red and baking soda turn it blue. This is related to chemistry because depending on the pH level of the natural dye ingredient can determine what color is created. This is related to art because dye can be used to create clothes and many other designs.
Today we learned how to use the Chinese broken brush technique. I painted bamboo and flowers. The bamboo was more difficult than the flowers because I had to make the ink lighter with water and over lap the bamboo.
Today I created a heart by weaving to different color papers together. First I folded two strips of paper in half. Second, I cut a curved shaped on the non folded side. Next, I cut 4 strips along the folded side . Then I started to weave the two papers together.
Our weaves combine with bonding because we are intertwining strips of paper together. The weaves we made represent ionic bonds. They are showing a difference in patterns. For the first one we used purple, orange, and blue, strips to weave into green paper. For the second weave we used green, orange, and purple to weave into blue paper.
My name is Jordyn Hanes. I am in spanish 3. My global citizen website explains climate change, homelessness, and economic crisis in the United States. The website includes social media's contribution to global problems. Also, it consists of helpful sites for the global problems. I learned that global citizens are important to society.
Bohr Model
For this Project my element was radon. I made my electrons, Protons, and Neutrons out of colored construction paper using a hole puncher. Radon has 86 protons, 136 Neutrons, and 86 Electrons.
Element Art
For this project I drew a picture that relates to my element. I drew a forest because Radon comes from the grass, rocks and soil.
Cultural and historical context might have shaped the making of the periodic table by people organizing and governing themselves. They might have put those characteristics in organizing the periodic table into categories like groups or families. One way cultural and historical context might have shaped the making of the periodic table is the way people lived there everyday lives. While going through their day to day they might have come across some elements. A cultural way might be the things people used in everyday life and someone discovered what the object was made of.
Periodic Table History
On this worksheet I made a tweet posing as a scientist to explain the periodic table.
Today we filmed scene 4. It took a couple of takes to film the whole scene because it is more difficult to remember long lines. We recorded in front of a green screen. The background of this scene will be inside a house.
I researched healing mandalas. Mandalas originated from India and was used as Buddhist art during the first century bce. The healing mandala is used to gain wisdom and for meditation. It can also be used for focusing. Some principles of design that can be used for healing mandalas are pattern, rhythm, repetition, and balance.
Today we learned how to use and pair the microphone with the ipad. We also got a hard copy of our scripts and highlighted our lines. Lastly we found the place for us to shoot scene 2.
An ultrasonic sensor is used to measure the distance to an object using ultrasonic sound waves. The sensor sends a wave above audible hearing range and then receives an echo back. The hardware used for an ultrasonic sensor are two transducers. One of them acts as a transmitter while the other one acts as a receiver. They also have a non-contact range 2 to 400 cm detection with an accuracy of 3mm and a measuring angle of 15 degrees. There is also a trig pin used to trigger the sound pulses. The echo pin is high when the ultrasonic burst is transmitted and it stays high until an echo is receive from the sensor.
Distance = (speed x time) / 2
Today we did a workshop with Dad's Garage. The people from Dad's Garage specialize in improve. An activity we participated in was when one student would sit at the front of the classroom and we gave them a topic to talk about. Other students would ask the student at the front of class questions about the topic.
Today we wrote the last two scenes of our skit. In the third scene the young man being drafted has a discussion with his mom about fighting in the war. During the last scene the young man talks with his mom and best friend about his decision.
Today we started writing our script. We chose the Ancient China Civilization. We also wrote the first two scenes of our skit. In our first scene there is a messenger coming to draft a young man for the war. In the second scene the young man explains to his best friend that he has been drafted and doesn't want to fight.
Our robot has something to do with physics because when it is moving it is creating friction between the wheels and the floor. The specific type of friction happening is kinetic because there is a force acting on two surfaces. When the robot is staying in place it is static friction. We would use the coefficient of friction to find the amount of friction between the floor and the robot wheels. Something else that relates our robots to physics is the mass of all the components. We have to level the mass a certain way so the robot won't tilt one way more than the other.
Lessons that I learned from The Epic of Gilgamesh are to trust your gut and not fold under peer pressure. I learned that from when Enkidu was hesitant about going into the forest to kill Humbaba but he went anyway because Gilgamesh convinced him to. If Enkidu did not follow Gilgamesh into the forest and not help kill Humbaba the Gods wouldn't have killed him.
I had to create letters that spell out Chemvas with images of chemistry and art tools. I also had to create a background showing value. I used different shapes and sizes of the images to create the letters. I liked using sketch.io because there were a lot of different tools to use. I could use these tools for future art projects.
Skittles Lab
In this lab we sorted skittles by color and found the percentage of each color in the pack. Then we compared the percentages from our pack of skittles to other group's Percentage.
Bubble Lab
In this lab we tested different dish soaps to compare the bubbles they formed by blowing in a straw. We measured the diameter and made qualitative observations of the bubbles.
I believe that art is a creation that makes a person feel emotions or have complex thoughts. The artists must also persuade people about their creation. I think school subjects can be art too. For example experiments in science can be used to create something. Math is used in art for measurements and proportions. It applies to ELA because words from books or newspaper are used. A majority of art is used to tell history.
