Product Design

Coaster Tool Safety Project

What is craftsmanship and why is it important when you are making a product you want to sell?

Craftsmanship is the skill that someone uses when they're making good looking products. Craftmanship can reflect the time and amount of effort that was spent on the product. This is important because the craftsmanship of a product is what will determine if your product sells well or doesn't sell at all. People want to buy good looking products that look like a lot of time and thought was put into it, not things that look like they were rushed and put together any kind of way.

Rating my craftmanship on my coasters.

5/10 Due to the fact that I planned my coasters too much and I didn't glaze my coaster . I also accidently cut my coasters unevenly but, overall I like how the coaster came out all together.

Process 1) I sketched out the design I wanted for my coasters, and brainstormed the woods and different patterns I would use.

2) After picking the woods I was going to use I cut the wood down to the sizes I needed using the Table saw.

3) I used the miter saw to trim down the wood because it was easier to cut the shorter pieces than the table saw

4) After all of my wood was cut I proceeded to glued my wood together and wipe off any residue/ leaking glue with a damp paper towel then clipped them together in the pattern I wanted it so that the would will glue fimly together and left it to dry.

 5) In the next class period (2 days later) I took the clips off and put my piece of wood through the planer which made my wood flatter and smother.

6) Because my wood was still not even I used the table saw to cut the wood into 4 squares and cut off the extra wood that was left over.

7) For my coasters I didn't use the router table because my wood was too thin but the router table could be used to smoothen out your wood.

 8) When all the woodwork was done I was supposed to move on to the finishing process, which was water popping my coasters by spraying water on both sides, leaving it to dry, and sanding them smooth again but I didn't get to that part. Then, In the next class period I was supposed to start glazing my coaster using a paintbrush to spread the glaze across the coasters, But I left my coasters how they were without the glaze because I felt like they looked good that way.
