The goal of this project is to design and create a personalized wooden drink coaster. The coaster should be functional protecting surfaces from heat and moisture while also showcasing creativity through its design. The final product should be sturdy, safe, and visually appealing.
To begin, I explored different types of coasters, common sizes, wood materials (like pine, oak, or plywood), and finishing techniques such as sanding, staining, and sealing. I also looked into design methods, including laser engraving, wood burning, and painting, to decide how to personalize the coaster. This research helped me understand what tools and materials I would need and what styles would be most practical and durable.
I sketched several design ideas for shape (round, square, hexagonal), size, and decoration. I considered how the coaster would reflect personal style or a theme geometric patterns. Once I chose my final design, I planned the construction steps: cutting the wood, smoothing edges, applying the design, and finishing with a protective coat.
After creating a prototype, I tested the coaster by placing both hot and cold drinks on it to check for warping, moisture absorption, and stability. I also tested how well the design held up after use and whether the protective finish worked as intended
5. Evaluation:
I evaluated the final coaster based on function, appearance, and durability. I reflected on what went well (like the smooth finish or neat design) and what could be improved (maybe making the coaster thicker or adding different designs/engravings to make it a little more personalized). Overall, the project helped build woodworking and design skills while allowing for creativity and problem-solving.
