“Defining the Monster” was a project where we had the option of creating either a creatively written book or a film. I chose to make a film and worked independently, taking on the roles of director, actor, and editor. The purpose of the assignment was to provide social commentary by identifying and exploring a metaphorical “monster” within our society. I decided to focus on the teen drug epidemic affecting high schools.
Through this project, I was challenged to think critically about a real-world issue and represent it symbolically. Using storytelling, I aimed to show how easily teens can be drawn into addiction, especially when they feel isolated, excluded, or disconnected from society, highlighting the emotional and social factors that make them vulnerable.
