We learned about Ancient Civilizations and how each behaved or did to survive. We learned about Ancient China and their multiple dynasties, the Indus River Valley, Ancient Egypt, Mesopotamia, and Rome and Greece.
In class, we made bricks out of water and mud to imitate how some ancient civilizations built their homes. We also made structures out of bamboo and twine.
The Columbian Exchange was the interaction between the eastern and western hemispheres. Both intentionally, unintentionally, and forcefully -- goods, animals, people, and diseases were exchanged from and to both hemispheres.
This project activity involved selecting ingredients originating from a specific hemisphere and creating a dish using only those ingredients. My (randomly assigned) group from the western hemisphere used potatoes, sweet potatoes, blueberries, and cocoa powder to make diced fried potatoes with pepper and cocoa sweet potato pudding with a blueberry reductant topping. I learned that it was really difficult to use ingredients from only one hemisphere of the world and actually make it taste good. I understand why the European countries wanted to obtain these new goods from the New World.
