My name is Alexandria Sweeny, but most people just know me as Aleks (pronounced Alex). I was born in Atlanta, Georgia on December 25, 2003. I lived in Stockbridge until I was 3, moved to Jonesboro, and then ended up back in the middle of Atlanta when I turned 5. I have an older sister, whose name is Erin. Even though we are three years apart, we are still able to find things to do together. I enjoy spending time with her whether it is something as small as just watching television or as big as driving down to Tybee Island.
I enjoy creating in my free time, such as crocheting, knitting, and sewing. I focus on clothing but crocheting toys and blankets are a fun past-time. I have been crocheting and knitting for about 10 years now. My mom started knitting and crocheting first and I became intrigued after watching her. I just started sewing about 5 years ago. My mom started sewing after seeing me do it. I found interest in sewing from watching my aunt. She quilts in her free time and every time I visited them I preferred watching her sew rather than playing with my cousins.
I participate in the United States Sea Cadet Corps, which is a leadership program that teaches children and teens how to be excellent leaders as well as productive members of society. Members have the ability to grow in rank by going to trainings. I have done many trainings including recruit training, National Flight Academy, and Petty Officer Leadership Academy. Recruit training is the first training that every cadet has to go to prior to attending any advance trainings.
I enjoy being a well-rounded person, so not only do I focus on my academics, but I also enjoy playing sports. In elementary and middle school I participated in cheerleading, but in high school I found an interest in both cross country and soccer. I have been participating in cross country since 9th grade and started playing soccer in 10th grade after seeing my friend Chanel play on the team.
As a senior, I am participating in dual enrollment at Georgia State Atlanta Campus. This is a way to earn college credits while still being a high school student. I am taking American Government and Elementary Statistics, both classes are ones that I will need in order to graduate when I am a college student.
I am planning on being accepted into Georgia Tech and majoring in biomedical engineering, specifically cell regeneration. I originally wanted to study chemical engineering, but after taking human anatomy and physiology I realized how interested I was in the human body. After talking to my parents, I decided that biomedical engineering would be much more interesting to me than chemical engineering. This way I am still able to focus on science and engineering.
After graduating high school, I want to attend Georgia Tech. I want to focus on biomedical engineering, more specifically cell regeneration and neurodegenerative diseases. After graduating from college, I am thinking about moving to another state in order to experience more opportunities. I will most likely end up back in Georgia because my family is extremely important to me, and I don't want to live too far away from them. Following getting my bachelor's degree, I would like to be a biomaterials developer for Biogen Community lab.
