Alexandria Sweeny - EMPOWERMENT CONFERENCE

Assignment Description

We had to create a speech that represented a topic that we are passionate about. Students also had the option to do an art piece or a poem. We had to have a minimum of 3 minutes, maximum of 5 minutes of stage time. I decided to do a speech about falling victim to the society...which is about people changing based on the people or environment around them.

Textile Mini Projects

Weaving

I learned that weaving is quite simple, and can be used to make an array of designs. I learned that weaving was created in Asia and moved throughout the world through diffusion. It was used to make things such as clothes and shelter.

Knotting

Knotting was common in Chinese culture. Knots were given as blessings from elders to youngers. I learned that knotting can be used more as art compared to things such as hunting and safety.

Loom Knitting

Net making was really fun. I used the American method as opposed to the Russian method. It was very simple. The nets could be used to do many different things, I’m assuming that the specific nets we made could be very helpful for hunting and catching creatures.

Net Making

I enjoyed the loom knitting experience mainly because of the fact that I have been doing it for years. It was interesting the way we made looms and some people made interesting designs using the placement of the pegs.

Basket Making

I learned that basket making could be done in many different ways. The material in which baskets could be made out of were quite interchangeable. Basket making was popular in cultures that collected goods for trade also for cultures that had to transport multiple goods to different locations. The baskets were fun because some people used skinny sticks and some people used fat sticks which caused the overall product to be different in strength and design.

African Wax Print

We had to use glue in order to make a design on the fabric. The glue was a replacement for the wax in tradition batik clothing. We incorporated geometry by putting parallelograms in our designs. History was incorporated because we learned about the origin of the batik process. Including where it originated from and how/why it was adopted into African culture. The dying process dealt with science because the dye bonds with the fabric fibers through covalent bonding. This project was very interesting because we were able to incorporate all of our subjects while still having fun. My work could have been improved if I took more time in my design. My design with the glue was a little messy, and it could have been better if I was more careful with the glue.

Colombian Exchange Cooking Project

We had to bring in foods that were exchanged from either the eastern or the western hemisphere depending on the first letter of our last names. There were 2 teams, one for the western hemisphere and one for the eastern hemisphere. The team from the eastern hemisphere were able to take 3 items from the western hemisphere and the western hemisphere was able to take 2 items from the eastern hemisphere. The western hemisphere had a chance of catching a disease depending on the items that we grabbed. Since we took an item that came from an animal, cheese, we got a disease and lost a person from our team. We had to cook a meal using the materials we have and present them. In our class my side, the western hemisphere, won.

Summative Project

Recording3.webm

In this project we had to research a movie in Spanish. I chose the movie 7 años. We had to do a small summary about the origin of the movie, such as where it takes place, when it was released, and the genre. I also added that this particular movie is a Netflix original. In my project I highlighted the main characters of the movie. I also did a picture summary, with just a couple of words, based on the summary found on both Netflix and IMDB.
