A combined class of Chemistry and Visual Arts
The task of this project was to create a book with a display of unique audio and our own art to explain elements on the periodic table to young children. Ms. Simmons and Dr. Kurt chose our group, I had two other group members and the family on the periodic table chosen for us was Alkaline Earth Metals. When thinking about what to do for our project, we spent a lot of time contemplating what would entertain young children, in kindergarten. We finally came to the conclusion that we wanted to create a song, using the instrumental of a popular song, Lil Nas X's "Old Town Road". Then we used tiny canvas' to create our elements and e drew the background. The video s displayed to the right.
This project was a perfect merge of the art aspect and chemistry. I was able to gain skills in collaboration, develop a better understanding of periodic elements, and challenge artistic abilities.
Over a span of two to three months in ChemVAS, we created a variety of stations, challenged our skills of creating different pieces of artwork. I worked on a rang of stations from looming to knotting and everything in between. This allowed me to examine the difference between the different materials, and to develop new skills.
Chemistry cooks was a project which allowed me to further explore the clear connection between chemistry and art. I enjoyed chemistry cooks because we got to make food for this project and learn to use clay to make ceramics. This is my slideshow which I presented at the ChemCooks event.
This is a representation of how I imagine a cloud city. I started off with a gradient color to create my sunset background then added clouds and shapes to represent the “city” and “cars”. I added hot air balloons that are bringing people from the surface up to the cloud cities and their vehicles which are all about the sky, each having a trail back to the city itself. I used the web pen to decorate the city and make it appear to have the infrastructure. Also, toward the top, you can slightly see another cloud city far out in the distance, suggesting that there are multiple connecting with one another. I think I did a very good job because art is always a challenge for me but I spent a lot of time on this artwork and did research on how to draw clouds because I wanted to create them from scratch rather than using a base picture. I was a bit frustrated using the computer but in the end, it makes it more precise and actually less time consuming. My hard work shows because it came out nice.
