Artist Statement :
For my DADA inspired collage I chose to create a piece of art that represents the toxic body image and insecurities fueled by today's media. I used multiple photos of Barbie, a children's doll to show body and face that young girls compare themselves to. I cut out multiple quotes such as “skip the meal” and “perfection” and used those to represent the insecure thoughts that girls struggle with as the media pushes unrealistic standards onto them. The main focal point of my collage is the huge Barbie head that has people bowing underneath her, as if they are worshiping her. To me, this represents our young generation and the tight hold that these unrealistic standards of beauty have on their minds. I also pasted barbie heads onto burgers and trash bags to represent the way girls see themselves after constantly comparing themselves to super model type faces and bodies. My inspiration came from the DADA movement which originated from the reaction of WW1 in which artists rejected logic, reason, and aestheticism of modern capitalist society. My artistic intention was to reject modern media's ideas of the perfect body and face and to show the effects of the unrealistic standards women are forced to overcome.

Artist Statement:
Lisa Alembic is a contemporary artist that creates works of art that reflect her inner emotions and feelings. She studies how our bodies connect to ideas about where we come from and how we live. She looks closely at how people feel when they're forced to leave their homes and go through really tough times, especially when it happens to women. She wants to understand their pain, whether it happened a long time ago or is still happening now. For my piece of art I received inspiration from her works with graphite and paper. Her series “The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society” and her sketches of spiders inspired me to create my piece, “The Hidden”. Just like Lisa Alembik I sketched a cozy living room using linear perspective, and within the piece I drew a large spider and a woman lying dead on the carpet. I used shading techniques shown in Lisa’s sketches to show depth and perspective. The silhouette of the dead woman on the ground represents tragedy and sorrow. The spider in my piece is a hidden character watching over the woman, the spider is harmless and is drawn with small innocent eyes. The piece to me represents how tragedy can happen anywhere even in a cozy living room.
