Olympics

What do the Olympics represent? What do they mean to you?

Unfortunately the Olympics this year have been postponed. We all can agree this is a good thing because of the current situation our climate is in. When I think about the Olympics, think about coming together. I think about hard work, discipline, and persistence. The athletes in those games are the best in the world at what they do. What do you do well? What do you aspire to do well? For me, I aspire to run in the Boston Marathon. If you know about that race, there is a lot of history there. It is one of the biggest races in the running community. Community. That is a word that also comes to mind when you talk about Olympics. How big is your community? If you think about it, we are all in one big community in this world, and the Olympics brings us all together. This reminds me of a family reunion. But the biggest reason I wanted to write a little about this topic is because the Olympics have a truce that they aspire to support.

Here are the objectives:

  • To promote the Olympic ideals to serve peace, friendship and understanding in the world, and in particular, to promote the ancient Greek tradition of the Olympic Truce;

  • To initiate conflict prevention and resolution through sport, culture and the Olympic ideals, by cooperating with all inter and non-governmental organisations specialized in this field, by developing educational and research programs, and by launching communications campaigns to promote the Olympic Truce.

One of the most spectacular views are the scenes in the opening ceremonies, in my opinion. Every nation, big and small, walk out together, united, and a part of a bigger community. How does this relate to our school? If you think about it, we are in different small classes. We are in different grades. But we all represent one school. We represent a community of learners, united to achieve peace, understanding, and knowledge. This mimics some of our school philosophy as well in our Montessori classrooms. This is achieved in all classrooms. Physical education and games may look different and are louder, but overall they still strive to bring together a group of individuals for a common goal.

Take a look at the opening scenes from different Olympiads. They are readily available on youtube. They can be quite long as the opening ceremonies last for a few hours. Watch a small portion of it. Fast forward and see some clips from each different year. What feelings do you get when you see them?
