The Gifted Learner
Each learner has his or her own set of unique patterns and traits. Although there are many traits gifted students have in common, no gifted student is exactly the same, nor do they exibit traits in every area. As such, identifying gifted students can be very challenging. As an educator, it is imparitive that we are cognizant of the many different ways a student may demonstrate their giftedness in the classroom. Every student deserves to have their special and unique gifts recognized and nurtured.
Gifted children may act different from their same aged peers, here are a few of the differences you may observe:
May be overly sensitive to emotions in a piece of literature
They may be considered "an old soul" in that they are mature and do not find humor in the silly things
Understand sarcasm from an early age and have a keen sense of humor
They may be risk takers
Then again, they may think through the events and understand risks and not want to "risk" getting hurt or being wrong
Can work independently from an early age
Goal oriented
Exhibit an intrinsic motivation to learn
Want to know "why" and "how" with regards to concepts being taught in class
May prefer the company of older children or adults
Large vocabulary for their age
Quick to pick up on generalizations and desire to learn more about that concept
May have a greater prior knowledge base relating to concepts being taught in class as a result of reading higher level books
Become frustrated with same age peers who do not grasp a concept, or who are acting in an immature manner
Great memories
