Module Description:

In this module, students study the ratification of the 19th Amendment to understand how people advocate and encourage social change in response to gender and racial inequalities.

In unit 1, students begin reading The Hope Chest to learn about social movements in the early 20th century and demonstrate their comprehension of the novel by answering text-dependent questions. Additionally, they read firsthand and secondhand accounts to compare and contrast the purpose of each.

In unit 2, students continue reading The Hope Chest to summarize each chapter and identify evidence of important themes. Students write an essay about a theme in the novel at the end of unit 2, supporting their assertions with evidence from the text.

In unit 3, students connect their learning about the process of ratifying the 19th Amendment and advocacy for social change to the importance of voting and voting rights today. Students create a PSA encouraging voting and describing its importance to our society.

Assessments

  • Mid-Unit 1 Assessment:

    • Students read Chapter 4 of The Hope Chest. They then respond to text-dependent questions to demonstrate their understanding of the events of the chapter and character's motivations.

  • End-of-Unit 1 Assessment:

    • Students read first- and secondhand accounts of the same historical event, Barack Obama's inauguration. They then respond to text-dependent questions to demonstrate their understanding of the texts, comparing and contrasting the content of each.

  • Mid-Unit 2 Assessment:

    • Students read chapter 15 of The Hope Chest and respond to text-dependent questions about their reading. Students end the assessment by writing a summary around a theme that is evidence in the chapter.

  • Mid-Unit 3 Assessment:

    • Students read two texts about voting among young people. After reading, students identify the reasons and evidence used by the authors of each text to support their points.

    • Then, they write a response to a prompt to synthesize their understanding of each text.

End of Module Performance Task: Public Service Announcement about the Importance of Voting

Students will create a public service announcement (PSA) in which they present and support their opinion to describe the importance of voting and its role in supporting change. They will support their opinion with reasons, facts, and evidence from texts they've read.
