READ, READ, READ!

Spend at least 20-30 minutes a day, 4 days a week, READING.

General Notes

Year Overview

  • Modules 1-4 will not be done in order throughout the school year! Here is the order we will complete them in:

    • Module 2: Animal Defense Mechanisms

    • Module 3: All About Colorado

    • Module 4: Women's Rights

    • Module 1: Poetry

Grading Scale

  • Student work will be graded on a 1-4 scale.

    • 1 = the student demonstrates little to no understanding the skill or concept

    • 2 = the student demonstrates partial understanding of the skill or concept

    • 3 = the student demonstrates grade level work and understanding of the skill or concept

    • 4 = the student demonstrates above grade level work and understanding of the skill or concept

Responding to Reading

  • My expectation is that students are ALWAYS reading a book!! There will be at least one opportunity everyday for kids to participate in silent reading of a book of their choice.

  • Each month, students will be assigned a responding to reading assignment. Where they will have about 15 different activities to choose from to demonstrate their understanding of a current book they are reading independently. This is to ensure they are always engaged in reading a book independently.

  • The students will have a chance to share their final product with classmates during our "Book Chats." This will be a chance for students to discuss books they have read and recommend books to one another.

Weekly Articles

  • Each week students will be responsible for reading the assigned article and answering text-dependent questions.

  • Every week the article will be due on Friday. (unless otherwise specified)

  • This will be an opportunity for students to read about current events through texts that is age appropriate. These articles will also frequently be intentionally connected to the curriculum content we are engaging with that week.

  • Students will always have independent work time to complete their article. If throughout the four days of independent work time, the student does not complete the article, then it will become homework on Thursday evening.

iReady

  • Students are expected to complete one iReady lesson each week.

  • Students will be allowed to work on iReady during independent work time. If the lesson is not finished by Friday, then the lesson for the week becomes homework.

  • It is important that students do not fall behind on iReady lessons as it is extremely difficult to catch up. If a student does not complete their lesson for the week, they will be kept in for recess the following week to make it up, unless the lesson is completed over the weekend.

Morphology

Everyday we will have 10-15 minutes dedicated to morphology.

Each week, students will be introduced to at least two new morphemes. On Fridays they will have a quiz on the morphemes of introduced that week, plus any previous learned morphemes.

Students will make a notecard for each morpheme and its meaning.

About Our Writer's Notebook

Each student will have their own Writer's Notebook!

They will decorate their notebook to make it their own, with images and words that represent them.

This notebook will be used for:

  • grammar lessons

  • quick write prompts

  • goal setting

  • reflecting

  • morphology
