place value - The place of a number can be the ones, tens, hundreds, or thousands. The value of a number is based on the place the digit is in. It tells how much a particular digit is worth within the whole number. For example, in the number 157, the value of the 7 is 7 because it's in the ones place. The value of the 5 is 50 because it's in the tens place and if you count 5 tens, you will get 50.
