To describe or 'refer to the rank of' an Enlisted rank, you use the terms, chevron and rocker. A chevron is a triangle, and a rocker is the bar underneath the triangle. For example, the rank of Cadet Private First Class consists of one chevron and one rocker.
For the rank of First Sergeant, you would use chevron's, rockers, and an additional diamond in the center. For Sergeant Major, there is a star in the center. For Command Sergeant Major, there is a wreath and a star in the center.
To describe an Officer's rank, you use the terms, pip and diamond. A pip looks like a circle. For example, the rank of Cadet Second Lieutenant consists of one pip. For officer ranks with diamonds, the diamond would be faced horizontally on the rank.
To put ribbons on your uniform, you need to put them in order from most important to least as according to the order of precedence. Wearing the jacket, the lowest ribbon would be closest to your left arm.
