Coach Miller is excited for his second season serving as head coach with the Nighthawks. He has been coaching high school baseball since 2013, beginning as the assistant coach at Bell Multicultural High School in Washington, D.C. where he helped lead the Griffins to four consecutive city playoff appearances, finishing runner up in 2014. While in the nation's capital, he worked for the Washington Nationals Professional Summer Camps, as a Division Leader in 2014 and as the Site Director in 2015 and 2016. Upon moving to Denver, he joined with the Nighthawks in their second season ever as an assistant coach, the 2016-17 school year. Since then, he has been with the program as it has grown into the baseball force it is today. Before becoming head coach in 2024-25, he served as the head JV coach in 2023, leading two squads to a combined 20-3-2 record.
Last season's varsity team went 18-6, winning the 4A/5A City League and earning a spot in the regional tournament, where they lost to Riverdale Ridge in the first game 10-4.
Coach Miller primarily works as the STEM Teacher at Swigert International School in nearby Central Park. His family consists of his wife, Rachel, also a teacher in DPS; his daughter, Evelyn; and his super-mutt rescue dog, Duke.
Coach Wainman is returning for his 7th season as Assistant Varsity coach with the Nighthawks. He has coached multiple levels of high school baseball from freshman squads in the Cherry Creek School district through varsity and built a program from the ground up. He has been coaching High School since 2007 and will bring his experience and knowledge to support an increasingly competitive program at Northfield. He was a multisport athlete in HS and played college baseball in California. Coach Wainman believes deeply in the value of teamwork, tenacity and perseverance, understanding that baseball is a mentally taxing sport that takes consistent focus in order to create a successful team. How a player does anything is how he does everything, focus on the small things and the success will come.
Coach Wainman teaches IB Spanish at Northfield High School. His wife is also a teacher and his son was a former Nighthawk attending CU Boulder while his daughter is currently a freshman Nighthawk.
Hello! My name is Christopher Gomez, I go by Coach Chris. When it comes to me I was born in Los Angeles, California, and raised in Denver, Colorado for the majority of my life. I have been playing baseball since my days at the Recreation Center and with Little League. I moved on to college ball after high school, both at North Dakota College at Bottineau. I then transferred to Oklahoma Panhandle State University. When it comes to my aspects of the game I am big on small ball and making sure that we do everything in our power to secure a win for the team. If that means sacrificing an out for a run, that is something I am willing to do. When it comes to my style of coaching I am very vocal and like to make sure I am straight forward with all athletes. I want to insure that all athletes are getting better but are also learning aspects of life as well. Thank you for all the support I have received from the Northfield family! I’m excited to be back and help the Nighthawks win state!
Coach Dario Herrera Jr. will serve as the JV head coach and catching coach for the Nighthawks this year. Last season, he led the JV Nighthawks to an undefeated 15-0 record. In 2024 he served as the C-Team head coach and led the squad to a 9-1 record. He is also the founder and has served as the head coach and head of baseball operations and player development for the Denver Royals Baseball Club, an NPO that gives opportunities to inner city baseball players to play at the highest levels at zero cost to families. DRBC has been 3x Colorado state champions in 12U, 13U, and 14U divisions.
Coach Herrera's philosophy is rooted in strong communication, contagious energy, character, and confidence. "Being a leader is nothing about being in charge. It's the awesome responsibility to see those around us rise. It's about taking care of those in our charge. You show up with love everyday and you work tirelessly to see that they will gain the skills and confidence to do well and excel in their lives. I am obsessed with being a leader!"
