Course Description

The Preliminary course involves the study of design, communication methods, construction techniques, innovations, fibres, yarns, fabrics and the textile industry. Practical experiences are integrated throughout the content areas and include experimental work and project work.


The HSC course involves the study of the history and culture of design, contemporary designers, emerging technologies, sustainable technologies, consumer issues and the marketplace. This course culminates in the development of a Major Textiles Project which is specific to a selected focus area and which includes supporting documentation and textile item/s.


For whom is this subject intended

This course will suit students who enjoy:

  1. Working and designing with textiles with practical task orientated learning experiences.

  2. Working independently on self-directed exercises in a challenging learning environment.

  3. Pursuing a growth model of success based on a determination to ‘build’ skills, capacity and a framework to underpin further learning post-high school.

Particular Course Requirements

In the Preliminary course, practical experiences should be integrated into the Design and Properties and Performance of Textiles areas of study as either experimental work and/or project work. In the HSC course, the major textile project allows students to develop a textile project that reflects either a cultural, historical or contemporary aspect of design. Students are expected to draw upon the knowledge and understanding of design, properties and performance and the TCFAI developed in the Preliminary course.
