Prerequisite

Currently learning an instrument is desirable.


Course Description

The Music 1 course provides students with the opportunity to acquire a broad range of musical knowledge, understanding and skills and attitudes, through learning experiences based on performance, composition, musicology and aural work across a range of musical styles. Both the Preliminary and HSC course students will study concepts of music through performance, composition, musicology and aural across a range of styles, periods and genres.


For whom is this course intended

Music 1 caters for students with varying degrees of prior formal and informal learning in music, and accommodates the different needs and abilities of individuals.


Music 1 also supports students who are interested in a career in the music industry, sound recording, composing, teaching or performing.


Main Topics Covered

Students will study three topics in both the Preliminary and HSC course from the following list:

Australian Music, Baroque Music, Jazz, Methods of notating, music and religion, music and the related arts, music for large/small ensembles, music of the media, music in education, music of a culture, music of the 18th, 19th, 20th and 21st centuries, popular music, renaissance music, rock music, technology and its influence on music, theatre music.


Particular Course Requirements

Year 11 course

Students will:

Study at least THREE topics from the list above.

Develop knowledge and understanding relating to the use of the musical concepts, pitch, duration, dynamics and expressive techniques, tone colour, structure and texture.

Develop skills in Performance, Composition, Musicology and Aural.


HSC Course

Students will develop a greater knowledge and understanding of the musical concepts listed in the Year 11 course. Students will study THREE topics from the list above which will differ from those studied in the Year 11 course, or TWO topics which differ, and ONE topic from the Year 11 course reflecting a greater depth of understanding and research.


In addition to core studies in performance, composition, musicology and aural, students select THREE electives from any combination of performance, composition and musicology. These electives must represent EACH of the three topics studied in the course.
