Course Description

Visual Arts involves students in the practices of art making, art criticism and art history.

Students develop their own artworks culminating in a ‘body of work’ in the HSC course that reflects students’ knowledge, interests and understanding regarding art practice and demonstrates their ability to resolve a conceptually strong body of work. Students critically investigate works, critics, historians and artists from Australia as well as those from other cultures, traditions and times.


For whom is this subject intended

For students who want to develop a deeper understanding of Visual arts and how it relates to themselves and the wider world. This course provides an excellent opportunity for students to develop their analysis and interpretation skills while providing the chance for students to extend themselves in their chosen visual medium. The HSC course provides a background for any student looking to study further creative subjects.


Main Topics Covered

Year 11 course

  • Case studies of a variety of artists and who will inform their artmaking

  • Art History and criticism, the role of the artist and artist practice

  • The Frames and how they help us interpret and understand art

  • 2D - (drawing, painting, watercolours, photography)

  • 3D - sculpture

  • 4D - film, photography, installation and performance art


HSC Course

  • Students create a major artwork which reflects their interests and independent research

  • Deeper level of understanding in the relationships between artist, artwork, world, audience within the artworld through looking at artworks and artist case studies.


Particular Course Requirements

Year 11 course

  • Artworks in at least 2 forms and extensive use of a process diary

  • Content of Artmaking Practice, Conceptual Framework, The Frames

  • A broad investigation of ideas in Art Criticism and Art History


HSC Course

  • Development of a body of work and use of a process diary

  • Conceptual Framework, Practice, Frames

  • A minimum of 5 Case Studies (4–10 hours each)

  • Deeper and more complex investigations of ideas in art criticism and art history
