Overview
Camera Operators in the News division need a very different skill set to Camera Operators for other productions. Our News division needs camera operators who can shoot vision to tell a story. When shooting a story you must keep in mind that your video will be voice-overed by the Reporter or Anchor. Capturing as many angles and shots possible will create good vision to use. In the News, one shot will be used for about 3 seconds before cutting to another shot. Close ups on people, wide shots, panning shots are all good practice.
Sound on Tape Interviews
Interviews are crucial to any news piece, from the TODAY Show or Nightly News every news broadcast will have soundbites. They are when talent or people are speaking about the story. You don't see the reporter, you don't hear the question you only hear the person talking. At CCN News we use soundbites almost every package. To record a sound bites, remember the following;
- shoot shoulder up
- the subject does not look into the camera, they look at the side of the frame.
- if the subject is looking left keep them in the right frame of the shot or vise versa if they a looking into to the right, frame them in the left of the shot.
-Always ask them to say, AND SPELL. Their first and last names so editors can easily name them for their titles.
Studio
When operating in a studio environment, Camera typically don't move around. Usually the only movement will be in the establishing shot and the welcoming shots. However these shots are very simple and require minimal movement to the Camera, usually only just zooming in or panning. Keep the talent framed in the middle from the waist up and framed in the center of the shot. Sometimes talent will move around, ensure you keep them in the center mark - typically you will need to move the camera slightly to keep up with talent.
When reporting for CCN we like to operate professionally, when being a reporter you will be involved in the process of filming the segment, editing it and working very closely with the News Directors. If you have a story idea, email ccn-news@dowstu.catholic.edu.au. News Directors will give you an outline of what needs to be covered, a time frame and a time limit. Reporting for Good Morning Corpus can be either in two forms.
'Live' Cross, First Story (30 Seconds)
Story Package (55 Seconds)
'Live Crosses' to CCN News
At CCN News, everything is pre-recorded, however the top story of CCN News is a live cross to the reporter covering it. On the show it will appear to be live, in reality it will be pre-recorded.
When crossing 'live' to CCN News you should remember;
Begin with saying 'Good Morning Guys' or 'Hey Guys'
You need to be able to articulate the story in around 25seconds. It will only be you on the air. No soundbites or b-roll.
At the end of the cross, throw back to Jack, say "Back to you in the Studio", "Back to guys".
Story Packages
During most editions of CCN News, their is around 50-55seconds to have a story package. These are reports with the reporter in the field, these packages include soundbites, voiceovers and piece to cameras. To make a story package you need to layout the package like this;
Voice Over, Introduce the story with something catchy and interesting to grab the audiences attention. During the Voice Over B-Roll will be playing over
Soundbites, have people talking about the story
Piece To Camera, This is where you will appear on the camera for around 10 seconds explaining the event or story you are covering.
Soundbites, have people talking about what they are enjoying, or why they are doing it
Voice Over, conclude the story and sign off. To sign off say, "For CCN News, Jack Hahn CCN". Insert your own first and last name where Jack's is.
