What is your background in Fashion Design?
My passion for design began early, at the age of five, when I started creating clothes for my Barbie dolls. This early interest in fashion led me to pursue formal education, and in 2001, I earned an SA degree in Fashion Design, with a focus on Production. Shortly after graduation, I obtained my first business license and launched a small-scale design business, marking the beginning of my journey as a business owner.
Throughout my career, I have gained extensive experience across a wide range of industries. I have worked with materials ranging from bulletproof vests to wedding dresses, spending several years specializing in the design and creation of bridal gowns. My professional experience also includes roles in manufacturing, where I served as a seamstress, and contributed to both special orders and design teams. I have also gained valuable experience working in both alteration and bridal shops. Additionally, I have served as an independent consultant, assisting businesses in establishing and optimizing their manufacturing departments.
In 2016, I earned my TR Master Certification, further solidifying my expertise in the field. I also hold a Bachelor of Science degree in Applied Business Management, which has complimented my fashion background by enhancing my entrepreneurial and leadership skills. Over the years, I have shared my knowledge through private and group sewing lessons, as well as pattern-making classes.
What is your favorite thing about Fashion Design?
What I find most rewarding about Fashion Design is the blend of creativity and challenge it presents. Every human body is unique, making the process of designing for the human form both complex and exhilarating. The field is dynamic, constantly offering opportunities to learn new skills and techniques. Each designer brings their own approach to achieving the best creative outcome, and understanding these diverse methods fosters critical thinking, a skill that benefits individuals both professionally and personally throughout their lives.
Why did you choose to teach Fashion Design?
I chose to teach fashion design because I am passionate about sharing the knowledge and skills I’ve acquired throughout my career. Fashion design is an incredibly creative and technical field, and I find great fulfillment in helping others develop their unique design perspective and craftsmanship. Teaching allows me to inspire the next generation of designers, equipping them not only with the practical skills necessary for the industry but also with the critical thinking and problem-solving abilities that are essential in any creative field. For me, it’s about fostering creativity, innovation, and confidence in others while contributing to the future of fashion.
Tell us about yourself:
I was born and raised in rural Eastern Oregon, where I developed a deep appreciation for the outdoors through hunting, fishing, and raising animals. Over the years, I have lived in Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Utah, Wyoming, and Nevada. In 2004, my family relocated to Las Vegas, where we have enjoyed building our lives and raising our children.
I have been involved with the Doral Academy community since the opening of its first campus, Saddle Campus, in 2013. For five years, I worked as a substitute teacher across nearly all campuses, with the exception of Red Rock Elementary. In the 2023-24 school year, I officially joined the Red Rock High School team. The 2024-25 school year marks the inaugural year of the Fashion, Textiles, and Design CTE program. I am thrilled to embark on this journey with you as we work together to build and expand the program.
Outside of teaching and designing, I enjoy a variety of activities, including reading, hiking, scuba diving, crocheting, knitting, running, and spending quality time with my family.
