Students may be familiar with some aspects of the heart, such as pumping blood all around the body, but they may not be familiar with a more detailed structure and function.
In this lesson, you will:
In the previous lesson, we explored important concepts associated with blood:
If you answered "YES", you are ready for Lesson 2 - The Heart & Blood Flow!
If not, you can always recap over Lesson 1.
For this task, we are going to revise and summarise our learning of the heart structure and function.
Working in groups (or individually), complete the heart graphic organiser below with your knowledge of the structure and function of the heart.
You can complete this in your copies, or via access to Google Classroom under Task 1.
From our learning, we know that the heart is a pump which transports blood all around the body. This is called blood circulation.
As the oxygenated blood moves along through the blood vessels, it interacts with other organs and systems in the body. Afterwards, the deoxygenated blood is transferred back to the heart.
For this task, we are going to create a "blood flow map", showing the pathway of blood as it travels throughout the body.
Your pathway should include:
You can create this by drawing in your copies, or using the template below. This can be accessed on Google Classroom under Task 2.
For this extension activity, we are going create a model of the heart to aid with our learning of heart structure and function.
Your heart model can be made from any materials, such as plastic bottles, clay, paper, etc.
Here are some examples to help spark your creativity!
Record a video of you building and explaining your model OR take a photograph of the finished labelled model. Upload your work to Google Classroom under Extension Activity.
Reflect on your learning from this lesson. What have you learned?
Write your reflections in your copies and/or complete using the Student Reflection document on Google Classroom.
In this lesson, you demonstrated the flow of blood throughout the human body.
From your learning, write a detailed account of how blood travels through the heart.
Write your account in your copies and upload to Google Classroom under Homework Task.
