Watch the videos below and follow the instructions to draw a variety of textures in your sketchbooks. When you have completed the exercises in the 'How to draw Textures' video, please photgraph them and upload to the assignment link below
Look at and discuss the slideshow 'Texture'. Then spend some time feeling the various textures of the items I placed on your tables-velvet, lace, fur, satin, netting, tinfoil, bubble wrap, cutlery, woolen hat, scarf, leather gloves, shells, stones, leaves, flowers, twigs etc. Think of adjectives to describe them, e.g. shiny leaves, soft fur. Now look at the slideshow 'Texture in Paintings' and try to identify some of these textures and speculate on how the artist might have achieved them.
Choose one of the items you examined in class. Divide a page in your sketchbook into 4 equal sections. Do an outline (shape) drawing of your item in each section. Don't add detail at this stage. On one of your drawings, use a range of graphite pencils to create texture. Then choose 3 different mediums to use on the other three drawings e.g. colouring pencils, caran d'ace crayons, oil pastels, acrylic, watercolour, or gouache paint etc. Experiment with some of the painting techniques we discussed to achieve your goal.
This task begins with a Blind Bag experience. Each of you will be given a paper bag filled with a variety of objects. Leave your sketchbook open at a blank page and have a pencil to hand. Put the hand you don't draw with, into the bag and without peeking, explore the textures within. In your sketchpad, using a combination of words and drawings, record the textures and any memories or emotions they spark. This exercise is concerned with feelings, so you are not expected to guess exactly what form or colour something is, simply sketch the images and write the words that pop into your head.
You will develop your imagery into a design for a tile and consider how you might recreate your design in clay. Prior to moving on to the design stage, you must research ceramic artists - choose your favourite and write a little info about them, including a sketch of one of their pieces of work. Artist research and Tile Design should be photographed and uploaded via the assignment link below
Students should be able to:
Identify and categorise various types of textures found in artworks, providing explanations on how they might have been achieved
Experiment with a range of art media to create different textures effectively, demonstrating an understanding of how to manipulate materials to achieve tactile qualities
Research and analyse the work of ceramic artists who emphasise texture in their creations, discussing the impact of texture on their artwork
Design and make a clay tile based on drawings created during a 'blind bag' experience, showcasing an ability to incorporate a variety of textures into the final piece
Reflect on your creative process, discussing the role of texture in your clay tile and how the lesson enhanced your understanding of the art element texture
