Pinhead STEM Internships Opportunities for Juniors

By Austin Anderson

Juniors have the opportunity to be involved in a STEM internship from the Pinhead Institute. Pinhead Institute is a nonprofit organization that relies solely on donations and grants that promotes science education which inspires teens to follow their dreams. Pinhead internships provide students with the opportunity to gain experience, life long skills, and an opportunity to be independent for a few days and/or weeks. Another benefit that comes with being a part of this program is being able to try different career options that best fits a students’ future. When applying for college students can put this program on their resume as another program that will help students get into college. Currently there are six students applying for Internships. Applications are due before Thanksgiving break November 19, 2021. Applicants are encouraged to register as a volunteer with Pinhead.

The group this year was unfortunately not able to attend the meeting in Telluride, but they enjoyed the Facebook Live projects presented by the 2021 interns.

“The presentations that were shown this year in the meeting were very good slides, full of visual experience, very professional and it seemed like everyone really enjoyed it,” stated Mrs. Baer, one of the Pinhead connections at our school.

Dolores students have been very enthusiastic about the Pinhead Internship,” said Mrs. Webster who helps students with their intern applications and takes students the Pinhead presentations for the last 10 years. All students who turn in applications will be interviewed in December by the Pinhead and selected by their interest level and enthusiasm. Pinhead takes as many interns as they can fill.

Juniors who are interested in pursuing their dreams can fill out a form the summer after their junior year, explaining why they want to explore that career option and why they would be a good candidate for the internship, if the student gets accepted the whole trip is paid for by grants and generous donations from different people. “This program is fantastic. Perfect timing for juniors,” said Mrs. Baer.
