DJS follows a mastery approach based around both Bruner’s theory of a CPA (concrete, pictorial, abstract) and ‘The 5 Big Ideas of Mastery’. Lessons are centred around rich mathematical discussion and use CPA to expose the maths. Written work (often a small proportion of the lesson) consists of daily workbook work and journaling activities. This is supported and consolidated further by our 4 rules session. Four rules is a 3 times weekly chance to practise arithmetic and focus on written methods.
The use of physical objects to represent number. These may be the actual objects ( 5 apples) or a representation ( 5 counters)
Moving to represent numbers through drawings and symbols. These may match the physical object in appearance or representation
Use of standard abstract symbols that may not have a link to the number of items.
for example there is nothing in the appearance of the numeral 5 thats shows it represents 5.
