Students continued their multiplication journey last week in learning strategies to help them multiply by 3 and 4, and getting continued practice with those basic facts. One strategy is to break a larger number down into easier number and multiplying known facts to later add them. They learned that the distributive property of multiplication is what allows us to do that.
For example: 4 x 7 = (4x5)+(4x2).
Of course, the end goal is to get them to the point of memorizing each fact, but learning this strategy not only helps them in a pinch, but aids in their conceptual understanding of what multiplication is!
