Impossible Escape: A True Story Of Survival and Heroism In Nazi Europe has won the Sydney Taylor Book Award!
The Sydney Taylor Book Award is presented annually to outstanding books for children and teens that authentically portray the Jewish experience. Presented by the Association of Jewish Libraries since 1968, the award encourages the publication and widespread use of quality Judaic literature.
District 65 had the pleasure of welcoming author Steve Sheinkin to speak at our middle schools in 2016 as part of an all-district author visit. He is the author of amazing works of nonfiction Bomb: The Race To Build--And Steal--The World's Most Dangerous Weapon, Born To Fly: The First Women's Air Race Across America, Lincoln's Grave Robbers and The Port Chicago 50: Disaster, Mutiny and the Fight For Civil Rights.
Along with his co-host, K-6 school librarian Stacey Rattner, Steve present Author Fan Face-off, a video series in which each episode, one famous author and one student/fan go head-to-head on 10 trivia questions from one of the author’s best loved books. On his YouTube channel, Steve describes AFF as "a middle-grade book game show, a booktube showdown, a book-lovers zoom challenge for the pandemic era!" Enjoy!

The Face-off above is between author Ruth Behar and Annika, a fan from Virginia. They are challenging each other see who knows more about Behar's coming-of-age account, Lucky Broken Girl which was a 2018 Pure Belpre medal winner.
Lucky Broken Girl speaks to the diversity of the Latinx experience as it tells us Ruth as a child of Polish and Russian Jewish heritage whose family immigrated to Cuba in the 1920s. She like other European Jews grew up speaking Spanish and adopting Cuban culture as their own. Her family, along with other middle and upper class Cubans, left for America during the height of Fidel Castro's regime.
