Note To Self

(Checking Books Out When You Need A Mental Health Check-in)

This collection of books was curated in response to Governor JB Pritzker's landmark legislation regarding mental health services for young people in the state of Illinois. As school librarian, a major part of my responsibility and commitment to my community is to provide children and adults with online and print materials that support them socially, emotionally and psychologically as well as academically.

How fortunate we were at Chute Middle School to have the governor sign the legislation in our beloved building!

Below is an excerpt from Superintendent Dr. Angel Turner's letter to the District after Governor Pritzker's visit:

Dear District 65 Staff,

Today was truly a special day in District 65 as we welcomed Governor JB Pritzker, State Superintendent Dr. Tony Sanders, Mayor Daniel Biss, members of our mental health team, and many other esteemed leaders and elected officials to Chute Middle School.

Their visit marked the celebration of landmark legislation (SB1560) aimed at expanding mental health services for students across Illinois and I do not believe it was any coincidence that District 65 was selected as the backdrop for this special honor.

Our district has long been on the forefront of social-emotional learning and student mental health support, with intentional investments that prioritize well-being and belonging for all students. From preschool through eighth grade, our students are surrounded by a strong team of deeply dedicated professionals including social workers, psychologists, nurses, health clerks, school counselors, and dedicated educators who all work together to support the whole child.

On a weekly basis our children engage in social emotional learning with educators, and for the past five years, our staff has also conducted mental health screeners to proactively identify needs and provide structured interventions.

This is not new work for us. It is deeply rooted in our community values and has become central to how we educate, support, and uplift every student. I am deeply grateful to you for all that you pour into our students each and every day.

As we look to the year ahead, I know there will be challenges, but I remain deeply committed to ensuring that District 65 continues to be both a bright light in our community and a lighthouse district for others across the state.

With gratitude,

Dr. Angel L. Turner (she/her)

Happy and Healthy Reading!
