Course Requirements and Recommendations
Students are required to gain 3 credits (3 full years) of math credit to graduate. Freshmen begin in one of four places based off of 8th grade placement, grades, and teacher recommendation - Algebra 1, Algebra 1 Honors, Geometry Honors, or Algebra 2 Honors. Students may also start in the Vanguard competency-based program in their respective course. Students will then progress along their path based on success in their course. If you have questions regarding freshman year placement, please reach out to your current teacher, or contact the HHS Math Department Chair.
It is recommended that a student successfully complete a level of Algebra 2 by the end of junior year, as it is typically the best course to prepare for the SAT.
After Algebra 2, students have a wide variety of upper level courses to choose from based on success in previous courses and post-high school plans. Though three years of math is required for graduation, it is recommended to take a fourth year of high school math.
Many of our courses also offer blended options. Students who succeed in blended math courses typically have a strong independent work ethic and are comfortable seeking resources and help as needed.
