Students are required to gain 3 credits (3 full years) of math credit to graduate. Freshmen begin in one of four places based on 8th grade placement, grades, and teacher recommendation: Algebra 1, Algebra 1 Honors, Geometry Honors, or Algebra 2 Honors. Students will then progress along their path based on success in their course. If you have questions regarding freshman year placement, please contact your current teacher or the HHS Math Department Chair.
It is recommended that a student successfully complete a level of Algebra 2 by the end of junior year, as it is typically the best course to prepare for the ACT.
After Algebra 2, students have a wide variety of upper-level courses to choose from based on success in previous courses and post-high school plans. Though three years of math is required for graduation, it is recommended to take a fourth year of high school math.
