A self contained classroom of Middle School Students was able to go on a field trip to Stades Farm and Market. Field trips are rich with life lessons: they provide valuable insight into the community, and they give students a small taste of structured independence. Taking students on a field trip is an excellent opportunity to practice social skills outside of their everyday environment. Special needs students benefit from these social experiences outside of their classroom and school. Our goal is for these students to thrive outside of the school setting and become productive members of society.
2nd Grade students learned how to retell and summarize plot, about character traits, genre, and how to be respectful audience members by attending a live professional performance.
1st Grade students were able to benefit from the experience of professional theater. This was a first field trip for many of our first graders due to Covid. Most importantly The Wizard of Oz included important social emotional learning such as: self-esteem, friendship, and taking care of yourself. Many literacy skills were also applied such as: character, setting, plot, asking in depth questions, and comparing and contrasting.
Kindergarten students were able to experience a professional performance of the Wizard of Oz. Many of our students would not be able to experience a live performance of this magnitude outside of school.
7th Grade students gained firsthand insights into how early colonists in the Chicago area lived. This enriched their current instruction in Social Studies. The grant covered admission for 92 7th grade students.
Girls Who Code Club comprised of 30 girls from 3-5th grade were provided with after school snacks to aid in their ability to focus during their after school meetings.
The West Oak Intermediate School engaged in an interactive Positive Behavior Intervention and Supports assembly. The assembly reinforced PBIS Hip Tips and expectations and brought the whole school together for a positive purpose. This assembly was geared toward the social emotional skills that our district is working so hard to support.
