They were required to live like they were in the military. At most boarding schools they dressed in military uniforms and girls had to get their hair cut into short bobs and the boys long braids were cut off. They had harsh punishments for breaking the rules. They had to march in formation and lived on a strict schedule. The dorms were large with lots of cotts where the children slept. All of their personal belongings were stored away from the children.
