What is Positive Behavior Interventions and Support?
PBIS is a process for creating safer and more effective schools. It is a systems approach to enhancing the capacity of schools to educate all children by developing research-based, school-wide, and classroom behavior support systems. The process focuses on improving a school’s ability to teach and support positive behavior for all students. Rather than a prescribed program, PBIS provides systems for schools to design, implement, and evaluate effective school-wide, classroom, non-classroom, and student specific plans. PBIS includes school-wide procedures and processes intended for all students and all staff in all settings. PBIS is not a program or a curriculum. It is a team-based process for systemic problem solving, planning, and evaluation. It is an approach to creating a safe and productive learning environment where teachers can teach and all students can learn. (See pbis.org for more information)
PBIS is not new to Springhurst. It was originally launched in September of 2010. However, like all systems, curriculums and programs, we thought it was time to take a closer look at how PBIS was being implemented and what we could do to improve upon the model that previously existed.
With that being said, we have begun implementing our updated version of PBIS. We had a kick off assembly in October 2019 to explain the various components of this framework. We introduced a reward system to encourage positive behaviors in and around Springhurst. These Springhurst areas include our hallways, recess/lunch areas, specials, bathrooms, and buses. We introduced a new eagle mascot, who was recently named in a schoolwide election, and we are listening to feedback given by students and staff and making adjustments as we go.
