Children need social-emotional skills to thrive both in the classroom and in life. Social-emotional learning (SEL) curricula teach children techniques to:
Gain confidence
Set goals
Make better decisions
Collaborate with others in work and play
Navigate the world more effectively
Second Step
Second Step provides instruction in social and emotional learning with units on skills for learning, empathy, emotion management, friendship skills, and problem solving. The program contains separate sets of lessons for use in kindergarten through fifth grade implemented in 22 to 28 weeks each year. These lessons are implemented by the School Counselor and Classroom Teachers and are offered to all Springhurst Students.
The Zones of Regulation
Self-regulation is something everyone continually works on whether or not we are cognizant of it. We all encounter trying circumstances that test our limits from time to time. If we are able to recognize when we are becoming less regulated, we are able to do something about it to manage our feelings and get ourselves to a healthy place. This comes naturally for some, but for others it is a skill that needs to be taught and practiced. This is the goal of The Zones of Regulation (or Zones for short).
Social Thinking
With the Social Thinking Methodology, you gain evidence-based strategies to help people age 4 through adult improve their social competencies, including:
Self-regulation
Social-emotional learning
Executive functioning
Perspective taking
Social problem solving
