English Language Proficiency Assessments for California (ELPAC)

What is ELPAC?

The English Language Proficiency Assessment for California (ELPAC) is a mandated state test for determining English Language Proficiency (ELP). The ELPAC is administered twice throughout the year. It is administered as an initial assessment to newly enrolled students whose primary language is not English, as indicated on a Home Language Survey; and, annually, as a summative assessment to students who have been previously identified as an English Learner (EL) Students.

What is the difference between the Initial ELPAC and Summative ELPAC?

The Initial ELPAC Exam is given to students who newly enrolled in school whose primary language is not English, indicated in the Home Language Survey. The score on the Initial ELPAC will determine if a student is placed in a designated EL Class or is classified as Initial Fluent English Proficiency (IFEP).

What is to be expected on the Summative ELPAC?

The Summative ELPAC is broken down into 4 different sections. The sections include: reading, speaking, writing, and listening. Below are what students can expect on each section.
